Ice Dam Removal & Repair Services What is an ice dam? Ice dams are ridges of ice that form on your roof. As the snow melts, the water backs up behind this dam of ice. This water can leak into your home, causing damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. What causes an ice dam? Ice dams are caused by the roof being at different temperatures at different areas. Often, the heat loss from your house will warm up the top part of the roof. The snow melts and flows down the roof until it meets the part of the roof that is below 32 degrees (usually at the edge of the roof). At that point, the water freezes into an ice dam. How do ice dams lead to water damage? Water backs up behind the dam and, as it sits on the roof, works its way under the roof covering and flows into the attic. From there it can seep through insulation, ceilings, walls and other areas where it can cause damage. What does an ice dam look like? Look for a ridge or block of ice at the edge of your roof. The dam will often produce many icicles (see photo to right).
How do you prevent an ice dam? Keeping a consistent attic temperature can help prevent ice dams. Insulation and ventilation are key components of maintaining the proper conditions in the attic and on the roof deck.
What should I do about my ice dam? Liberty Exteriors can help you repair the damage caused by ice dam damage, as well as repair your roof to prevent future damage. Please contact us at 763-689-5997 or request a FREE estimate. |
